The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) serves to educate students in the fundamental knowledge and academic subjects that they need to become capable, responsible, and self-reliant citizens.
VDOE provides an online data tool, School Quality Profiles, to help inform parents and the general public about Virginia schools’ progress in raising achievement and improving teaching and learning. The site features detailed information about student achievement, college and career readiness, program completion, school safety, teacher quality and other topics of interest. Report cards are available for schools, school divisions and for the commonwealth.
In addition to engaging AISN developers and engineers to produce and host the School Quality Profiles site in a fully compliant and secure environment, VDOE is actively using the VITA contract to engage AISN in other projects such as working to improve the VDOE Staff Directory and the VDOE Directory and Template Structure.
I just wanted to let you know how impressed we are with the work [the AISN team is] doing for the School Report Cards. We couldn’t be more pleased! They are good listeners, on task, and there is little for us to do besides provide feedback. I am sort of a “veteran” of contract engagements and this one stands out as one of the best.
—Director, Information Management at Virginia Department of Education
Legislation mandated that the VDOE create a stand-alone School Progress Report Cards website to replace The School Report Card. The new site needed to incorporate specific data points collected by the agency, including attendance, on-time graduation rates and teacher quality. The goal was to create a better school report card system that communicates to parents about the quality of Virginia public education.
After conducting thorough needs assessment and discovery sessions with VDOE, we created UX Prototypes for the search and reporting screens, focusing on mobile-first usability. We created data visualizations through animated, SVG programming to dynamically serve up and filter through the data in an easy-to-use, visual format. The User Interface was customized for each device size to optimize the features and screen real estate available to each device. The site was developed in PHP, is 508-compliant, follows all the Commonwealth Standards and uses web services from VDOE to update the data in realtime.
Work on the School Quality Profiles site is ongoing. The state Board of Education has identified additional reports to be added to the School Quality Profile reports as the information becomes available. These include reports on gifted education programs, average class sizes, and statistically valid surveys of students, teachers and other school employees on the learning environment.
